Introducing Nokia’s sweet new N-Series media convergence phones, we have, from the left, the N71, N80, and the N92. And Nokia isn’t kidding around with these 3G Series 60 phones, no sir, they’re busting out the WiFi for the N80 and N92, a 3 megapixel camera in the N80, decent music support in the N71, DVB-H for the N92, and QVGA or greater resolution displays in all three phones. Both the N71 and N80 should be available Q1 2006, with the N92 following in the middle of the year. They’re priced at 400, 500, and 600 Euro (US$490, $610, and $730) respectively, and we’ve got all the juicy specs, along with more pictures, after the jump.

Starting with the music centric N71, we?re looking at a clamshell with a 2 megapixel camera, along with a second cam for video calls. As far as music playback goes, the phone has a 5-band equalizer, an FM tuner, and support for MP3, AAC, eAAC+, and WMA formats. Sadly there is an unimpressive 10MB of included memory, but it is expandable via miniSD. They also include Bluetooth and USB2.0 for hookups, and there is a 240 x 320 display, along with some external screen action.

Nokia N71 is another Symbian 9.1 smartphone in the collection of Nokia. The new clamshell is well equipped and is aimed in the mid-range of customers. It is based on the S60 3rd edition user interface. N71 has 3G UMTS support and can offer fast data transfer via GPRS and EDGE. Besides the 2 megapixel camera there is also a VGA one for video calls. The construction and design of the phone are quite controversial as it is bulky and somewhat unstable in hand, but this, of course, is a matter of personal taste.

With a feature set near identical to the hot-selling N70, Nokia’s N71 clamshell brings a smorgasboard of features to the table in a clamshell form factor; Jørgen Sundgots pops the hood and takes a look. Slightly more rotund than its popular N70 sibling, Nokia’s N71 is - at 99 x 51 x 26 mm and 139 g - still smaller than its closest match for a 3G phone, the Sony Ericsson W900i. The bulk is to an extent explained through its extensive slate of features, which includes a dual display setup; one a decent external affair with a dedicated button for a handy, backlit time and date view, the other a highly impressive and spacious 2.4-inch internal screen with QVGA resolution, an ambient light sensor and user adjustable brightness.

A year or so ago, you knew where you were with a Nokia S60 smartphone - it would be about a certain size and be a ‘candy bar’, with later models even foregoing a wacky keypad design. Since then, we’ve had the ‘transforming’ N90, the gullwing E70 and the thumb-keyboarded, wide-screened E61, to name but three. The N71, then, doesn’t come as so much of a shock.

I was going to write about this being Nokia’s first S60 clamshell device, but then I remembered the 6260. And the N90 itself, each of which could be configured in clamshell mode. But this is a true clamshell, in that it can only be used in this one form factor. As with other clamshells, there’s the advantage of more screen and keypad real estate, and a better position during calls, at the expense of slightly greater thickness and (probably) fragility.
